Dance Through the Decades

December 3, 2010
Twist and Shout
When you think of a retirement community what is the first thing that comes to mind? Pumping music? College and high school students, community individuals and grandpas and grandmas hooting and hollering?  A 12-hour dance marathon? No? Well Iowa Central Community College and Friendship Haven is hoping to help change that as they are co-hosting an all-night dance marathon to help raise scholarships for Friendship Haven residents and Iowa Central students.

The Dancing through the Decades themed dance marathon will be held at the Career Education Building on the south end of the Iowa Central campus on Friday, January 28th. The dancing will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and won’t stop until 7:00 a.m. the next morning.

“Live music, entertainment and DJs will play all night long.  You might learn a few new dance moves from throughout the decades, and there will be special theme give-a-ways, videos and special events throughout the evening.  If you like to have fun and want to give back to the community, you won’t want to miss this event,” said Jennifer Crimmins, Director of Development for Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.

Throughout the 12 hours, food and beverages will be available; there will also be special guest appearances and performances. It will be an action-packed 12 hours with many surprises!

“This should be a really fun event, and the proceeds will benefit a lot of people,” said Iowa Central V.P. of Development and Alumni Relations Laurie Hendricks. “We want to do an evolution of dance, from sentimental swing all the way to the hip-hop throughout the night.”

So how do you get involved?

First, you must register by Friday December 17th (must be at least 14 years of age).  Registration is $25 to hold your place to dance!

Then, we ask everyone to raise at least $150 in donations to dance.   If you register in a group of 5-9, you only have to raise a minimum of $125 per person.  If you register in a group of 10 or more, you only have to raise a minimum of $100 a person.  Donations must be received by January 24, 2011.  The more you raise, the more incentives and prizes you are eligible for!  (We can help you with ideas to raise funds to dance!)

Get your Groove on, recruit your friends and family and come dance on January 28th! This event is open to the public. We hope to have a variety of age groups represented from high school to seniors.

You can register for the event online at, the Friendship Haven Development Office, the Iowa Central Development Office, and at Hy-Vee. There will be special recruitment events at Fort Dodge Senior High, St. Edmond and Iowa Central Community College.

Money raised at the event will benefit Friendship Haven’s Good Samaritan Fund and the Iowa Central general scholarship fund. Each year Friendship Haven incurs more than $900,000 in charitable and benevolent care. Scholarships from the Good Samaritan and Care Trust Funds help to offset the cost for senior citizens living at Friendship Haven who can’t afford to make their full payments.  And, every year the Iowa Central Foundation awards nearly $200,000 in scholarships to deserving students.  Ashley Matsen, Wellness Director at Friendship Haven sums it up, “What a fun and exciting way to bring people of all ages together for two great causes.  This is such an interactive fundraiser, much different than anything that has been done in Fort Dodge.  Anyone can dance – we hope you’ll join us!  Get ready to dance the night away – for a great cause!”
