Holiday Concert 2010

December 3, 2010
Twist and Shout
The Holiday’s are upon us, and what better way than to share this time with family, friends, a little music and a lot of fun. This is the time of year that we remember the traditions of our family, find joy of the present time, and embrace the future.

The Iowa Central Performing Arts Department would like to invite you, your family and your friends to join us for an evening of Holiday Remembrance. Iowa Central will open the doors to Decker Auditorium on Thursday, December 9th at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM and on Friday, December 10th at 7:00 PM for everyone to enjoy a kick off to the holidays with their Holiday Concert 2010.

Members of the Concert Band will open the performance with the Mannheim Steamroller version of “Joy to the World” and combining it with “Fum, Fum, Fum.” The new title is called “Joy to the…Fum, Fum, Fum”. The next piece the concert band will perform is a musical depiction of how presents were delivered to children in El Paso, Texas at the end of the 18th century. The stage coach was the means by which goods were distributed. This hectic piece simply depicts what one day “On the Overland Stage to El Paso” sounds like. The concert band will conclude with a Karl King March that uses the melody of “Auld Lang Syne” as the basis of the tune. Entitled “The Gateway City”, this march celebrates the New Year’s Eve idea that we should enjoy ourselves now, should old acquaintances be forgot.

Following the Concert Band the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will open up for the Concert Choir performing an arrangement of “In the Bleak Midwinter:”. Before the Concert Choir takes the stage solo, they will join the Concert Band in a tradition that was set not too long ago. The Concert Band and Choir will combine in a uplifting performance of “Gloria Fanfare”.

The Iowa Central Concert Choir, under the direction of Kathleen Schreier and accompanied by Mary Heimbruch, will take center stage for their selections of Holiday Spirits entitled “For Him All Stars Have Shone” and an all time favorite, “Angels We Have Heard On High”. Before closing the curtain on the first half, the band and choir will once again join together to bring us “A Holiday Celebration”, a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” , “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “Silent Night”.

The Iowa Central Encore Singers will open the second half of the concert with a great Irving Berlin piece to keep us warm. From the hit musical White Christmas, snuggle to “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm”. Encore will then present a beautiful arrangement of “Someday” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Te end their set, the Encore Singers will take us back to White Christmas and bring us to a winter mood with the song “Snow”.

Finishing out the Holiday Spirit will be the Iowa Central Jazz Band. The Iowa Central Jazz Band will be celebrating the memory of a Civil War rebel, John Brown, with the Woody Herman standard, “John Brown’s Other Body”. You will recognize the main theme of this tune, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. As an announcement or a reflection of the season, the jazz band will remind the audience that “Christmas Time is Here” from the Charlie Brown series. Then the jazz band will celebrate the green tree that symbolizes the season with “Theme and Variations on O Tannembaum”. The jazz band will remind the audience that they should behave to get presents on Christmas by performing “Why Don’t You Do Right?” from the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. This holiday season will “swing” a little harder for the jazz band when they play a medley of “”We Three Kings”, “Silent Night” and “Jolly Old St. Nicholas”. Finally the jazz band will declare that “The Red Phantom Rides Again” as they present a variety of songs about Santa Claus through a rock version of the blues.

We hope you can join us on December 9th or 10th for our 2010 Holiday Concert – Happy Holidays!
