Karl King

January 11, 2011
Twist and Shout
The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge, IA is starting to plan their 2011 winter season. Three concert dates have been scheduled, and will be on Sunday, February 20; Sunday, March 13; and Sunday, April 10. All concerts begin at 3:30 p.m., and will be held at the Decker Auditorium on the Iowa Central Community College campus in Fort Dodge. There is no admission charge, since these concerts are provided by the City of Fort Dodge. Jerrold P. Jimmerson is the conductor of the band, Dan Cassady is the assistant conductor, with Duane “Oley” Olson as the band’s announcer.

The February 20 concert will be the Band’s annual tribute to former Conductor Karl L. King. Mr. King was born on February 21, 1891 in Paintersville, Ohio. After his childhood in Ohio, he traveled with several different circuses and conducted several of their bands. He came to Fort Dodge in the fall of 1920, and lived here until his death in March of 1971. He published nearly 300 compositions for Band, with nearly 200 being marches. He was truly America’s March King. This concert pays tribute to the varied styles of music he composed, featuring marches, an overture, ragtime, and more.

The March 13 concert is the Band’s annual Irish Concert to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This concert dates back to the early days of the Band under Mr. King’s direction. A wide variety of Irish music is being planned, and will include an audience sing-along of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and “My Wild Irish Rose”, along with everyone’s favorite, “McNamara’s Band”.

The April 10 concert has become two-fold in nature in recent years. It is the Band’s annual Scholarship Concert, where talented high school seniors and college freshmen can audition for three scholarships that the Band annually administrates. In addition, this concert will tie into the annual cultural emphasis for Iowa Central Community College. This year’s featured focus is the Caribbean, and many selections are being planned to showcase this region.

More details will be released about each of these concerts in the months ahead.
